Get To Know: Bonanza Coffee Roasters

Coffee is a hot commodity and with a coffee shop (or two or three) on every street corner it is fairly easy to get your morning/afternoon/evening caffeine fix. But with so many options, a cup of coffee has almost become too pretentious or in some cases, dare we say, a little pedestrian. Thankfully there are some coffee shops that bring the art back into artisan by breathing quality back into a simple cup of Joe. Berlin based coffee shop, Bonanza Coffee Roasters, is an example of just that. They pride themselves on making a good cup of coffee. We chatted with Yumo Choi, of Bonanza Coffee Roasters, to learn more about the café, their coffee and what they plan to serve us at Capsule Berlin.

Tell us about Bonanza Coffee Roasters-what is the back-story? How did you get started? Who is your clientele?

A graphic designer and an artist of Korean origin met in the Netherlands and got hooked on good coffee and were the first ones to bring this kind of coffee to Germany. We started as a coffee shop only but have been roasting for some time now. We deliver to wholesale customers throughout Berlin and Denmark. Our clients are known as third wave coffee shops, bigger cafés, or start-ups. Our customers are international, quality driven, rather unconventional, and engaged with our products.

How would you describe the atmosphere in your shop?

We are: uncomfortable, cosmopolitan, inspired and inspiring, challenging, honest, and always eager to learn. The atmosphere in the shop is hard for me to judge. This shop is so much a part of my reality…maybe better to ask our customers.

What sets your coffee apart?

Besides that we use better beans, we also roast it ourselves and continuously improve our knowledge about coffee. We use topnotch machines and work with a highly motivated and a well trained team of aspiring coffee professionals.

Where is it grown/roasted?

Our coffees come from Ethiopia, Guatemala, Kenya, Brazil, Rwanda- actually from every coffee producing country as long as the coffee meets our criteria for uniqueness and beauty. The coffees we choose are extremely rare and often we are the only ones in Germany who offer them.

What’s your favorite coffee drink?

Morning: Chemex (love Kenyan coffee in the morning)

Midday: Espresso (we are just testing our new Golkonda blend and I am already a fan, absolutely delicious)

Afternoon: Flat White (with our House blend)

What are you looking forward to at Capsule?

Our whole team has an affinity for fashion. I think we understand the quest for quality and originality of the represented labels. We are striving for the same things basically but we use a different medium. We are looking forward to the excitement and added value of being surrounded by highly creative people.

What will you be serving at Capsule?

The best coffee in town!
