NYFW: N. Hoolywood S/S 2012

While the rest of America flocked to the theater last Friday night, New York City’s fashion crowd was being treated to a cinematic showing of their own as guests crowded into Tribeca’s BMCC Performing Arts Center to view N. Hoolywood‘s Spring/Summer 2012 collection. Drawing inspiration from filmmaker and graphic design legend Saul Bass (the man responsible for some of film’s most iconic animated title sequences), designer Daisuke Obana presented a highly entertaining collection of garments, the majority of which featured some very clever graphic elements. “This season evokes the essence of Bass’ representative title backs by combining solid styles like those often seen in films of the Sixties with pop textiles and prints like those found in the scenes of feature films,” according to the designer. Making great use of highly luxurious, top-quality fabrics (the polos, for example, were incredibly soft and smooth to the touch), the Japanese label showcased a number of casual pieces that could easily be incorporated into the modern man’s wardrobe. Taking a cue from The Man With The Golden Arm (which is arguably one of Bass’ most popular works), many of the garments were adorned with striped, tape-like detailing that added some much-needed flair to an otherwise basic (but impeccably tailored) collection. – ADRIAN BRINKLEY
