Energetic friend of We Are the Market and lovely chanteuse, Seasick Mama, sat down with her drummer Chill Will (Will Fegan) for this week’s Tune In. You might remember her from a Capsule Vegas lookbook shoot we did with her a while back. They just got back from touring with ZZ Ward and were happy to tell us what they were listening to while they were on the road. Browse her Sound Cloud while you check out their musical narrative and these amazing exclusive photos of the band by Allison Pharmakis. Don’t forget to keep an eye out for Seasick Mama’s debut EP, Dead Like Money!
1. Tell us about when you first got into music — what were you into back then?
Seasick: I think my first cassette tape was Notorious B.I.G. I purchased it for my boyfriend in middle school. I opened it before I gifted it to him. He was mad because, he said, I made it lose value. I took it back and let him finger me after school. It was my birthday instead.
Chill Will: Where I grew up cats were all about hip hop. I remember I had a friend named Justin in first grade, and he played drums in his church. I thought that was the coolest thing ever. After that, I had to figure out a way to get behind a kit. I definitely had all kinds of music being played all around me. I think Sublime 40 0z was one of the first tapes I wore out.
2. How would you describe your taste in music now?
Seasick: Anything with strong rhythm and you can thrust your hips too.
Chill Will: I’ve gone through punk rock stages, hip hop stages, jazz, fusion, electro, ska, hardcore, metal. Basically, I am a huge fan of mixing genres and not putting restrictions or guidelines on what gets created. A good groove that makes you move is hard to come by and I’ve grown to really appreciate that.
3. Where/how do you prefer listening to music?
Seasick: I prefer listening to music live, with a massive a crowd. There is something euphoric about swaying and moving with a sweaty crowd, and how the band is controlling how you feel.
Chill Will: I prefer rolling up something real nice and putting on a good pair of head phones cause if your listening to your favorite tunes through computer speakers your offending the people who made that shit.
4. What medium do you prefer to listen to music? (vinyl, iPod, radio, etc)
Seasick: Is “car” a medium?
Chill Will: I prefer Vinyl but you can’t bring a record player in a car or in your pocket. I stick the portable record player aka iPod or iPhone.
5. Where do you go to find new music? What attracts you to a new song or band?
Seasick: My friends usually introduce me to new music. Sharing playlists or hand-me-down CD’s. My latest find, Dead Meadow. It’s a nice healthy dose of stoner rock. I don’t smoke pot, but this band definitely makes me curious of the lifestyle.
Chill Will: I’ll go back in the archives and listen to some old shit to get some inspiration. I don’t have Pitchfork telling me what I should listen to.
6. Do you have any all-time faves? What makes them your favorite?
Seasick: E.S.G., Liquid Liquid, Can, and Tomahawk. I listened to a bunch of their records while I was writing my first EP, Dead Like Money. (Out soon!) These bands really inspired me push expression.
Chill Will: One of my favorite albums is John Coltrane’s A Love Supreme. It has always helped me make sense of all the craziness that life throws your way, not to mention Elvin Jones on the drums and Trane reciting a poem he wrote to God in Part 4 of the piece. Do some shrouds and listen to this album. (I have a tattoo of this album’s name over my heart.)
7. What’s playing now?
Seasick: Everything that is on my playlist is what I have been listening to. They are all trendsetters, mavericks, and risk takers.
Chill Will: Right now I’m listening to the new Action Bronson Mix tape. Gangs. Steely Dan, Angelo, the New Deft ones, and Little Dragon.
